Family Portrait
(Sister and I)

Project Type :

2022, Sculpture

“Family Portrait (Sister and I)” is an asphalt sculpture piece and a sound recording surrounding the themes of family and labor. Asphalt road-making is our family business and I grew up visiting my family's factory and construction sites a lot. The asphalt material and the sound of labor are what I aimed to encapsulate and focus on the most. The installation is one squared asphalt tile that has two faces emerging out. It is my own face and my sister’s face cast in asphalt. Asphalt isn’t a conventional sculpture material, so material testing took up the majority of the making process. Asphalt roads break over time, to capture this essence I intend to have the sculpture deteriorate over time. The sound recording is a field recording conducted by my father while he worked on a construction site in April 2022.
